People who bought coins at last October's peak mostly still see green when they open their accounts now.
BTC is down 30% from last October, ETH down 40%, SOL down 48%. Even if SOL doubles from the current price, it just breaks even.
But a small group of coins have quietly crossed that line.
Not by hype calls, not by ecosystem narratives, but by a simple fact: turning user-paid fees into buy orders that crush their own circulating supply.
ARB has risen 177% from its bottom, ENA up 132%, RAY up 161%. The top gainers list is full, and the community is shouting "alt season is here."
But looking back to last October: ARB is still down 40.81%, ENA down 64.61%, RAY down 21.91%.
Big gains are just because they fell so hard before.
The ones that truly surpassed previous highs—HYPE, UNI, ZEC, NEAR, MORPHO, SKY, PENDLE—are on a different path.
Most protocols’ business model is: users pay fees, the team takes them, token holders get nothing. Governance rights? Just a voting ticket.
These few that crossed previous highs have overturned this logic.
HYPE is the most extreme example. 99% of trading fees and liquidation profits are directly used to buy back HYPE on the secondary market and permanently burn it. Not locked, not put into a treasury, but burned.
A total of 48.76 million tokens burned, accounting for 4.88% of max supply, worth about $4.5 billion at current prices. Past 30 days revenue $64.34 million, total historical revenue $1.26 billion.
The bigger the trading volume, the more intense the burn. This is a self-reinforcing deflationary flywheel: business growth → increased buy pressure → reduced circulating supply → price rise → more trading volume.
UNI’s story is even more intense. Over the past six years, UNI has been called many times a "useless governance token." "Uniswap makes so much money, what do holders get?"
In December 2025, the fee switch activates. 17% of swap fees are forcibly used to buy back and burn UNI.
By June 2026, protocol revenue totaled $23.15 million, averaging $129,000 daily, with circulating supply decreasing at 0.4% annually. Later, Robinhood Chain launched, contributing nearly half of Uniswap’s weekly fees in its first week.
UNI transformed from a "voting ticket" into a cash flow asset.
PENDLE is even more direct. 80% of fees go to buybacks, with buyback speed over five times the issuance rate, circulating supply hitting a historic low. 92% of sPENDLE holders have never unstaked.
ZEC and NEAR take another route: not relying on buybacks, but making the product itself valuable.
ZEC’s Nu7 upgrade cuts block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, while retaining Bitcoin-style halvings. Community vote supported keeping halvings by 98.9%. Mainnet upgrade on November 5, 2026.
The coin surged from around $500 in mid-August to over $1500, up about 200% in a month. Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang publicly disclosed investments in ZEC and ZODL; Grayscale’s Zcash product assets reach hundreds of millions.
The privacy sector has been repriced.
NEAR’s Confidential Intents TVL surpassed $70 million, growing 129.3% in 90 days. The entire NEAR Intents ecosystem TVL is about $137.8 million.
What demand does this product address? Institutional dark pool trading. Cross-chain transactions hide core order info; hedge funds, DAOs, institutional treasuries are willing to pay for privacy.
Product iteration itself is a reason to buy.
Old coins without real fee and buyback mechanisms can only continue to decline endlessly amid infinite unlocks.
Tokens that close the loop are ruthlessly using retail trading fees to buy out their own circulating supply on-chain.
Since 2026, crypto projects have spent $638 million on token buybacks, a record high, with about 90% from Hyperliquid and Pump.fun.
This is no coincidence. This is capital voting with its feet.
The next BTC wave may hit new highs, but it won’t carry all the old altcoins.
The difference isn’t in how good the story is, but how much of the protocol’s earnings turn into buy pressure for your tokens.
