A $5.7B wallet balance is not a $5.7B confirmed loss. That's the distinction getting lost in today's exchange-wallet scare. Tether says it froze over $1.57B in USDT; Circle reports over $800M in USDC frozen. Investigators also flagged a 20,000 WETH (~$44M) loan on Aave tied to the suspected attacker. The exchange says it's investigating. The full loss remains unverified. Crypto's real stress test: how far can one wallet incident spread through DeFi? $AAVE

Circle and Tether did a Great job this time. The crypto industry, including exchanges and stablecoin issuers, should work together to build an industry-wide security response mechanism. We need a real-time alert system that allows participants to share information immediately when a hack occurs, coordinate a rapid response, and temporarily freeze suspected stolen funds before they can be moved or laundered. Speed is critical. We should establish standardized protocols, clear responsibilities, and appropriate safeguards to ensure we can act within minutes, not hours or days. Protecting users and their assets should be a shared responsibility across the entire industry, not just individual platforms.

Circle is closely tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance. In coordination with law enforcement, we have frozen more than 800M USDC associated with the incident and will continue supporting the investigation.

The Binance hacker split $1.43B of bitcoin into 19 wallets within minutes. Tether and Circle froze stablecoins within hours. Bitcoin has no freeze button. Not one coin has moved yet. Full story for CoinDesk:

BINANCE JUST FACED ONE OF THE BIGGEST HACKS IN CRYPTO HISTORY. Binance says nearly $6.3 BILLION was affected in what could become the largest security incident the industry has ever seen. The attacker reportedly exploited an EIP-7702 delegation vulnerability, allowing control over wallet assets through smart contract code. But the biggest story is what happened next. The crypto industry moved fast to stop the damage: - Tether froze $1.567B in USDT. - Circle blocked over $800M in USDC. - Arbitrum froze around $30.5M. - Ripple, BitGo, Paxos and World Liberty also joined the response. In total, nearly $3 BILLION in assets leaving Binance was frozen. Still, the situation is far from over. The attacker reportedly holds more than 18,000 BTC, with funds spread across Ethereum, Bitcoin and Tron. Markets also felt the shock: - Nearly $1.5B liquidated in 24 hours. - BTC dropped below $77K. - ETH fell below $2,200. - ENA, UNI, LINK and PEPE saw losses of around 10%–15%. Aave also paused its lending markets after the attacker borrowed ETH using stolen USDT as collateral. Binance has suspended deposits and withdrawals while it investigates the incident with law enforcement. The exchange says customer funds are safe and promises to cover ALL losses. The real takeaway? Nearly $3B was frozen because the industry worked together. But one major exploit was enough to shake the entire crypto market.

Possibly the biggest crypto hack ever: billions drained from Binance hot wallets. What limited the damage? Tether and Circle froze ~$2.4B in stablecoins within hours. For years crypto said "no one can freeze your money." Last night, the freeze button was the hero.

Today is Black October, Largest crypto hack in history - $3B already frozen on chain - Tether froze $1.57B, Circle $800M - Withdrawals paused - Binance says SAFU and company will cover 100% APE is down too, around $0.10 now. I'm confident it will recover, but may take time once all of the funds are recovered. Best thing to do is to touch grass and regroup. Crypto isn't going anywhere, but we need better security. AI really is changing the game.

The Binance hacker may have just pulled off one of the cleanest DeFi exits we’ve ever seen. Tether froze ~$1.5B+ in USDT. Circle froze another ~$800M in USDC. It looked like a big chunk of the stolen funds was trapped. But the attacker had already moved. Before the freezes hit, one of the wallets deposited ~$60M USDT into Aave and borrowed ~19,762 WETH (~$45M) against it. Tether can freeze the USDT sitting in the wallet. It cannot freeze the ETH that was already borrowed out. Now Aave is left holding frozen collateral while the attacker walks away with liquid, unfreezable ETH. Two centralized issuers froze billions in minutes. Someone who understood DeFi composition found a path around both of them. This is why on-chain leverage and composability still matter more than people think. DeFi wins again. Centralization will never work in this industry.
