WalletConnect FAQ

When withdrawing crypto to a new self-custody wallet, you may need to verify that you own the destination address before completing your withdrawal. One verification method is Digital Signature, which lets you connect your wallet through WalletConnect and sign a verification message.This article explains what WalletConnect is, how it works during wallet verification, and what to do if you run into issues.

1. What is WalletConnect?

WalletConnect is an independent third-party protocol that securely connects your crypto wallet to platforms like OKX.

Instead of entering sensitive information, you scan a QR code using your wallet app (such as MetaMask or Trust Wallet) and approve the connection from within the wallet itself.WalletConnect is an industry standard used by hundreds of wallets and thousands of platforms. It isn't built, owned, or operated by OKX. Because it's a third-party service, your experience may vary depending on how your wallet app supports WalletConnect.

2. When will I use WalletConnect?

You'll most commonly use WalletConnect when verifying ownership of a new private wallet address during a crypto withdrawal.

To verify your address:

  1. Select Digital Signature as your verification method.

  2. Connect your wallet using either:

    • OKX Wallet, or

    • Other to connect an external wallet through WalletConnect.

  3. Scan the QR code using your wallet app.

  4. Approve the connection.

  5. Sign the verification message in your wallet.

After the signature is completed successfully, your wallet address will be verified and you can continue completing the remaining Travel Rule information.

3. Is WalletConnect safe?

Yes. Connecting your wallet and signing a verification message doesn't move any funds or expose your private key or recovery phrase.

The signature simply proves that you own the wallet address, similar to signing a document rather than authorizing a payment. Every connection and signature request must still be approved by you inside your wallet app.

4. Does WalletConnect charge any fees?

No. WalletConnect doesn't charge any fees for connecting your wallet or signing a verification message.

Signing a verification message isn't an on-chain transaction, so there are no network (gas) fees. OKX also doesn't charge any fees for this verification process.

Note: if you're asked to pay to "verify" or "unlock" your wallet, treat it as suspicious. Neither OKX nor WalletConnect will ask you to pay for wallet verification. If you're unsure whether a request is legitimate, contact Customer Support before proceeding.

5. I can't find my wallet or my wallet won't connect

Not every wallet supports WalletConnect.

Please check whether your wallet is listed in the official WalletGuide directory: https://walletguide.walletconnect.network/

If your wallet isn't supported, you can:

  • use another supported wallet that controls the same address, or

  • import your wallet into OKX Wallet and complete the verification there.

Note: importing a wallet doesn't move your assets. You remain in full control of your funds throughout the process.

6. I scanned the QR code, but nothing happens

If no connection or signature request appears, try the following:

  1. Open your wallet app manually to check whether the request is waiting for approval.

  2. Refresh the OKX page to generate a new QR code. WalletConnect QR codes expire after a few minutes.

  3. Update your wallet app to the latest version.

  4. Disconnect any existing WalletConnect sessions in your wallet app, then try again.

  5. Make sure both devices have a stable internet connection. If you're using a VPN or an aggressive ad blocker, temporarily disable it and try again.

  6. Restart your browser or use a private browsing window.

If the issue continues, since WalletConnect is a third-party connection protocol and each wallet app implements it differently. Connection or signing issues may originate from the wallet app or WalletConnect service rather than OKX.

You can try verifying your address using OKX Wallet, which doesn't rely on a third-party connection.

7. I can't sign because my address is on Solana, TRON, or another network

This is expected behaviour. WalletConnect signing on OKX currently supports addresses on:

  • Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks (such as Polygon, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum)

  • Bitcoin (BTC)

WalletConnect signing isn't currently supported for addresses on other networks, including Solana and TRON.

This limitation depends on the blockchain network of the wallet address, not the wallet app itself. Even if your wallet supports multiple blockchains, WalletConnect signing is only available for supported networks.

To verify addresses on unsupported networks, import your wallet into OKX Wallet.OKX Wallet supports address verification across 7 networks:

  • EVM

  • Bitcoin (BTC)

  • Solana

  • TRON

  • Sui

  • Aptos

  • Cosmos

Note: importing your wallet doesn't move your assets or transfer custody to OKX. Only import your wallet yourself. Never share your recovery phrase or private key with anyone, including OKX staff.

8. Why isn't WalletConnect working?

A WalletConnect verification involves three services:

  • your wallet app

  • WalletConnect

  • OKX

Most connection or signing issues are related to the wallet app or WalletConnect, both of which operate independently from OKX.If you're experiencing issues, you can:

  • following the troubleshooting steps above;

  • trying OKX Wallet, which provides a more direct verification experience; or

  • contacting Customer Support if the issue continues.

9. WalletConnect still doesn't work. What are my options?

If you're unable to complete Digital Signature verification, you can try one of the following alternatives.

Use another verification method

Select Switch verification method and choose Satoshi Test. This method verifies wallet ownership by sending a small test transaction from the wallet address.

Try the OKX website

For some OKX entities, third-party wallet connections are available only on the web version of OKX and aren't currently supported in the mobile app.

If you can't find the WalletConnect option in the app, try completing the verification on the OKX website instead.

Contact Customer Support

If the issue persists, please provide the following information when contacting Customer Support:

  • wallet app name and version;

  • blockchain network;

  • device model;

  • browser (if using the web);

  • screenshots of any error messages; and

  • the approximate time when the issue occurred.
